Author Guidelines
Articles
ASAGE accepts papers on any topic in aesthetics, written by graduate students who have not yet completed final requirements for the doctoral degree. Submissions should be under 3000 words (although exceptions may be made at the editor's discretion, to a maximum of 5000 words, particularly in the case of historical papers). They must be accompanied by an abstract of no more than 250 words and a word count.
Submissions should be written according to the specifications of The Chicago Manual of Style , 15th ed. ( University of Chicago Press , 2003). Please see The Chicago Manual of Style Online 's Quick Citation Guide at http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/tools_citationguide.html or examples. Authors must attest that material submitted is original, and free from plagiarism. Any necessary permissions should be obtained by the author prior to submission.
Linking to authorized online images of art works and audio or video files referred to in the paper is encouraged. Uploading Supplementary Files (such as data-sets) in addition to the submission is possible, to enhance readers' engagement with the work.
Book Reviews
ASAGE considers proposals for book reviews on an ongoing basis. To propose a book review, send the title, author and date of publication of the book that you would like to review, along with a 100 - 200 word description of why you think this book should be reviewed in ASAGE, and why you are qualified to do the review, to editor(at)asage(dot)org. Proposals for book reviews must be approved by the editor in advance.
Any successful book review will begin with a sympathetic summary of the main discussions and arguments of the book, before launching into a critical perspective on the material. The critical discussion must be civil and should be secondary to a discussion of the content. Reviews should also evaluate the book's potential impact on the field and aid readers in determining a book's usefulness for teaching, particularly for introductory aesthetics classes.
Book reviews must be no more than 1000 words in length and will be reviewed by the editor or book review editor. A maximum of four book reviews will be published per year. The reviewer may not be a student of the author whose book is being reviewed. Book reviewers must acquire their own copy of the volume to be reviewed.
Submission Preparation Checklist
As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
- The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
- The submission file is in Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect document file format.
- Where possible, links to authorized online images of art works referred to in the paper are provided. Where available, URLs for the references have been provided, and links have been verified.
- The text is double spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
- The text does not exceed the word limit, and is formatted according to The Chicago Manual of Style. Stylistic and bibliographic requirements are outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
- All references appear as endnotes, with a full bibliographic reference the first time that a work is mentioned, and a short reference after that, instead of using footnotes or parenthetical references and a bibliography. See JAAC for examples.
- If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal (i.e. unless you are submitting a book review), ensure that you have prepared your paper for blind review (see: Ensuring a Blind Review). This includes deleting your name from the file information included with every Word document. To do this, open your document and go to File > Properties > Summary > Author and delete your name from the 'Author' text box.
- The author(s) attest that material submitted is his or her own, and that any relevant permissions have been obtained for quotations and other non-original segments of the submission.
